October Monthly Update

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Can you believe it is already the end of October? Over these past four weeks, we observed Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Intersex Awareness Day, National Coming Out Day, LGBT History Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and for many tomorrow, Halloween, safely or at home! Be sure to check out our latest blog if you haven't already, found here.

Today, October 30th, we hosted an event sharing RTI research on domestic violence - one on a policy brief published by RTI Press about partner violence helping couples affected by incarceration (read here), and the other an excellent review of an evaluation demonstrating that we need more prevention programs for men and boys (read here).

Both were great talks and I enjoyed our exchange after each of them. There is clearly still much we need to consider in ending gender violence with developmental and environmental issues. A concern we have all had, especially now that COVID is in the mix as well. Please let me or Brittni know if you would like to give a talk at one of our upcoming events. I look forward to sharing more with you about what we have been up to this month in the RTI Global Gender Center below.

Please be sure to keep an eye out for the announcement of a 16 Days of Activism event in the works! Please be safe!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Event

On October 30th, RTI Global Gender Center affiliates Erin Kennedy and Venita Embry presented on their research in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, with over 20 participants attending. Ms. Kennedy shared her research focused on help-seeking among couples impacted by incarceration. She highlighted the individual, interpersonal and societal barriers to seeking victimization help detailed by women in her research. Specifically, she noted the importance of individualized care, providing increased and stronger safety nets for re-entry, and robust victims advocacy. Venita Embry presented her research on evaluating domestic, sexual, and interpersonal violence prevention programs for men and boys. Ms. Embry found that many programs vary in their presentation, content, effectiveness, and training for implementers. Ultimately, her research showed the need for more in-depth evaluation of programs, specifically those that could be easily distributed over social media to reach a broad audience. If you would like to read more about either of these projects, you can access Ms. Kennedy’s research here, and Ms. Embry’s research here. The recording is available in the  RTI GGC to all internal affiliates, and available to external affiliates upon request.
