Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Our fiscal year has ended like no other!! And September has quickly come and gone, but not without a few memorable dates and events. This month we pay tribute to feminist icon, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a "notorious" SHERO to us all! She will be deeply missed and dearly remembered as a warrior for gender equality and women’s rights. We also observed World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, Bi-visibility Day on September 23, and kicked off National Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. I look forward to sharing with you what we have been up to this month in the RTI Global Gender Center below!
Dr. Jaimie Meyer, Associate Professor of Medicine in the Yale AIDS Program presented on How Sex, Drugs, and Violence Intersect with HIV Prevention for Women on Wednesday, September 30 to 26 attendees. Dr. Meyer discussed the SAVA syndemic (substance use, violence, and HIV) and its disproportionate impact on Black women, stating that "HIV does not exist in a vacuum." She also shared findings related to decision aids that may increase PrEP awareness and reorient personal HIV risk estimation. A recording of the presentation is available to internal affiliates on the RTI GGC share drive, and to external affiliates upon request.
Sanitary Pads and Eco-Friendly Disposal for Students in Gurgaon
Since we know sanitary pads are an issue for girls in low resource communities, the RTI International India office is working with the Lotus Petal Foundation to help provide sanitary pads and eco-friendly disposal of used pads for students in Gurgaon, near Delhi in India.
Write to Prasanna Perumal of RTI International, India at pperumal@rti.org for additional information and to support the effort.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
