Miriam A. Hartmann is a public health analyst at RTI International. She is a principal investigator in the Women’s Global Health Imperative (WGHI), a group within RTI dedicated to improving the health status of women and girls around the world through rigorous epidemiologic, biomedical, socio-behavioral, and implementation research to improve infectious disease and chronic health outcomes.
Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Ms. Hartmann’s work as a gender specialist exhibits a cross-cutting commitment to identify and address gender inequalities across a spectrum of public health issues. She has experience working in sub-Saharan Africa and East Asia on a range of topics, including HIV/AIDS prevention and care, family planning, gender-based violence, and water and sanitation. Her focus on intervention development and research in the context of gender equity has led to the creation of several global resources, including Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) Compendium of Monitoring and Evaluation Indicators and more recently Ethical and Safety Recommendations for Intervention Research on Violence Against Women, co-published with the World Health Organization (WHO).
Ms. Hartmann has a demonstrated ability to manage and lead complex projects and to use data and insights to provide strategic program and research recommendations. In addition, she has experience training research staff; writing and designing study protocols, operating procedures, data management systems, and data collection instruments; and in qualitative research methodologies, analysis, and writing.
