July Monthly Update

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

RTI is celebrating its 65th anniversary!  Congratulations to RTI with all the impact made globally! The Global Gender Center has been in existence for 9 years now -- making strides with essential research to address gender inequality. RTI researchers have conducted almost 800 gender-related projects in more than 100 countries around the world. We have hosted more than 300 events with over 5,000 attendees and have two additional working groups aimed at improving our work in LGBTQIA+ inclusive research, as well as facilitating business connections across RTI's vast array of international project work. With more than 1,000 published articles about gender related issues, it is clear that we are in the gender business!
July was Minority Mental Health month, and we hosted an empowering and thoughtful event, see below. We also wanted to share a podcast series by affiliate Dr. Kineka Hull! In the first episode, “Adolescent Health and Sexually Transmitted Infections,” the Elevate Youth Programming team sat down to discuss sexually transmitted infection (STI)/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) trends and tools and resources to advance adolescent sexual health. You can listen here: https://rb.gy/m9jamz.
We are excited for upcoming programming for August as well on Women's Equality Day! One of our speakers will be a connection I made through Forbes, an Academy Award Winner who started The Pad Project and another will be from the RTI USAID Enabling WASH & Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) in Kenya project. Please get stay tuned for upcoming details.

In health,

July Publication Feature

In a recent publication, RTI International researchers examined the importance of personal agency and external correlates in the context of PrEP uptake. Using data collected over a 9-month period, researchers found that, while perceived higher HIV risk was associated with lower likelihood of PrEP uptake, condomless last sex was a potential predictor for PrEP uptake. Understanding what individual, interpersonal, and community-level factors can prevent or empower young women to take PrEP can help to address HIV prevention, especially for young South African women at risk.  July Project Win Feature

Congratulations to Dr. Elizabeth McClure and team on winning their award for the Global Network for Women's and Children's Health Research Data Coordinating Center from 2023 to 2030! RTI has hosted this center since 2001 and has undertaken numerous studies in 6 countries around the world on topics ranging from nutrition to addressing and ending newborn and maternal mortality.

July Event Recap

On July 26th, the RTI Global Gender Center hosted an event in honor of Minority Mental Health month. This event featured presentations from Drs. Lissette Saavedra and Ye Pogue, and also contained a moderated discussion by Dr. Courtney Peasant Bonner. Mental health can pose barriers to research both in ensuring the safety of participants, and also maintaining the health of the researcher. Presentations covered topics ranging from personal experiences with mental illness in research to work addressing mental health challenges among Latina women in North Carolina. If you are interested in viewing a recording of this event, please reach out to ivanderdrift@rti.org.
